The Archipelago of Langkawi

The Archipelago of Langkawi

Langkawi, which is more commonly known as the Jewel of Kedah (Kedah is Malaysian state located north of the country), is an archipelago composed of 104 islands.

This dream-like archipelago is situated in the Andaman Sea, not far from the Thai borders. Out of the 104 islands only one is habited, the biggest one. Humans take care of the biggest island and nature takes care of the other 103 islets. Sounds fair to me!

Anyway, since Malaysia is a Muslim country, any kind of alcohol is quite expensive to buy due to taxes. However, Langkawi is a duty-free island, so beer and wine is quite cheap down there.

HOW TO REACH THE ISLAND

By plane: you can take a plane from Kuala Lumpur and fly straight to Langkawi Airport

By car + boat: you can drive up to the state of Kedah from Kuala Lumpur and once you reach Kuala Kedah take a boat straight to the island—the boat trip last for approximately 30/40minutes.

If you’re in a hurry you should take the plane, which is faster. If, on the other hand, you wish to discover Malaysia then you should drive and enjoy the stunning panoramas along the highway.

WHAT TO SEE WHEN THERE

When in Langkawi there are so many things and places you could go see. First of all, you cannot miss the Pregnant Maiden Lake. The lake is located on one of the small islands, and it is said to have medicinal perks. The island where the lake is situated is stunning as it is a natural reserve.

Eagle Island is another must-see. This islet is home to thousands of eagles, which fly all around boats to look for food. Pulau Payar is the place to be to go snorkeling and see all kinds of fish and corals.

Other attractions: Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls, Pantai Tengkorak, Langkawi Skybridge, Langkawi Cable Car.
